3. REFLECTION

Experience

Initially, I had no knowledge on typography. I kept an open mind, learning throughout the classes. From the classes, I have gained much knowledge and also applied it into the course-works. I have understood the basics of typography and many things have come clear to me on how graphic design works. Lecturers are well prepared for the lectures. Hence, time is used efficiently for this part. I am more efficient doing work now compared to the start of the semester. I was struggling with Adobe Illustrator but after using it a lot for typography, I have become more familiar with it.

Observation

During lectures, Mr Vinod will stress on important points so that we remember them firmly. Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul gave feedback in class, but I did not like that the class was so huge that we had to come early just for attendance and wait for hours to get feedback. Sometimes, the feedback is not clear enough as "Ok, good." is often used. I know that it is done because we have time constraint, but I think that the class can be split into half to increase efficiency. I doubt my design most of the time as I never took foundation or diploma in design. Nonetheless, Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul gave constructive feedback.

Findings

As classes go by, I realized that typography is often neglected by non-designers. There was a slide in a lecture which said "On the streets, you look at girls. I look at type. - Hannes Von Dohren" and now I really look at typography everywhere I go. I try to identify good and bad typography whenever I see type. Besides, I have also become a more patient person. As a designer, consistency and patience is very important. Sometimes, a simple design may not be a bad design and vice versa. Reading is essential as it gives me ideas and inspiration to design my fonts or layouts. I find it interesting to read books on typography as they give me a deeper understanding in typography.
