FINAL PROJECT

30.10.2019 (Week 10)

We were going to make a protest placard for Troublemaker's Manifesto. For preparation, we were to obtain:
  • 5-7 ft stick
  • card board
  • single line manifesto (your belief about "design" and "society" with a purpose)
  • thick brush / marker / paint / Chinese ink
  • hot glue gun
  • newspapers

I thought of the single line manifesto: Make Design Great Again. This was inspired by Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan for the elections. I sketched out the different layouts.

Fig 10.1 Layout 1

Fig 10.2 Layout 2

I chose the second layout as the word "DESIGN" was emphasized on the right of the layout. The spacing between "MAKE" and "GREAT" was larger because I wanted the reader's eye to be directed towards "DESIGN" instead of reading it as "Make great again". Mr Vinod approved of the design and I continued my progress.

I drew the words with pencil and outlined them with black marker. After that, I filled in the black for "MAKE", "GREAT","AGAIN" while "DESIGN" was filled with red. After the paint has dried, I glued the broomstick onto the board.

We were to take a photo of ourselves holding the board and post it into the typography group. The board was also used for Troublemakers' Manifesto 2019 as a display.

06.11.2019  (Week 11)

We were to start digitizing the work with the single line manifesto used previously. We can change the layout. Only one additional color can be used for the poster design.

For English letters, we were to use the 9 typefamilies given previously:

  • Adobe Caslon Pro
  • Bembo Std
  • Futura Std
  • Gill Sans Std
  • ITC Garamond Std
  • ITC New Baskerville Std
  • Janson Text LT Std
  • Serifa Std
  • Univers LT Std
I searched online for some interesting typography designs.

Using "MAKE design GREAT AGAIN", I tried a few layouts which were inspired by the reference above:

Layout 2 did not bring out the message of "Make Design Great Again".

Fig 10.11 layout 3 with variations
I used Futura Std for "MAKE", "GREAT" and "AGAIN", Serifa Std for "design". The color choice was not good but the layout was good.

13.11.2019 (Week 12)

After getting feedback, I did color variations. Red was the most suitable (Trump also used red). I decided to choose the one without white outline.

Then, I continued with the animation in Adobe After Effects.

After receiving feedback, I decided change the size of "MAKE", "GREAT" and "AGAIN" because I felt like the layout was quite empty at the top and bottom.

3. FEEDBACK

30.10.2019 (Week 10)

General feedback:
Upon completing the protest card, we have to take photo of ourselves holding the protest sign and post into the Facebook group.

Specific feedback:
The orientation for A4 layout is supposed to be portrait. The "o" is similar to Gill Sans but ok. Overall ok.

 06.11.2019 (Week 11)

General feedback:
For project 2, we are to layout our text so that it can be displayed well. It is better to use up much space on the A4 paper than to leave to much white space.

Specific feedback:
For final project:
My first design was not suitable as the "cut" of words did not suggest the meaning of my tagline. For the second design, the color of the background has to be changed. Then only I will have to decide to change the color of "design".

13.11.2019 (Week 12)

General feedback:
For final project, the animation size should be A4 with 72 ppi. Submission for static image is today (13.11.2019).

Specific feedback:
The white outlines for "MAKE", "GREAT", "AGAIN" are not neccessary. The color choice is not good. Suggested colors: red, yellow or blue. The color chosen should bring out the message.
After changes are done, the red layout looks good. For the animation, the "design" should not be bouncy, instead it should be grand.
For the animation, the word "design" should come out with a grand feeling, suggesting me to let it stay at the enlarged size for a moment, before going back to a smaller size.

20.11.2019 (Week 13)

General feedback:
For final project, remember to put in sketches as they are important.

Specific feedback:
For the alignment, I should move the whole artwork higher so that the white space on top is less than the white space at the bottom.

4. REFLECTION

30.10.2019 (Week 10)

For the protest placard, I think that measurements are to be done carefully to avoid any mistakes thereafter. Besides, the painting of the words have to be precise and done quickly.

 06.11.2019 (Week 11) - 13.11.2019 (Week 12)

As this project is designing a poster, the words should be loud and clear. They should fill up much of the space. The meaning of the poster must be brought out and enhanced by using the right colors and animation.

Title: Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon

Although this book might not be about typography, but it is truly inspiring to read. It talks about how ideas generate, which are actually caused by influence around us. To create something truly original is actually mashup of one's influences. It is not plagiarism because you take a bit from here and there to make it your own identity. It allowed me to realize that as a designer, I have to get more influence by reading more books, researching more on other people's work to get inspired.

Title: White Space is Not Your Enemy by Kim Golombisky & Rebecca Hagen

Color basics: Choosing and using color
Color organizes: color can sort and clump to group together things. That’s the principle behind color-coding systems (electrical wiring, mall parking lots)
Color evokes emotion: e.g concept of team colors is meant to inspire strong emotions
Humans respond physiologically to color but most of the emotional muscle we attach to color is learnt

Choosing color: Culture
e.g. Western Christians associate red and green with Christmas but not everyone celebrates Christmas or shares those particular meanings of red and green
Patriotic colors for Americans, British, French: blue, red, white
Color science: common form of color blindness – can’t distinguish between red and green
U.S.: white – purity
China: red – good fortune
Pacific Rim: white – mourning
Americans, Europeans: black – mourning
* Consider the audience when communicating with color
* Consider context
e.g. green – fresh, cool, natural, environmentally friendly, healthy
“hospital green” – negative associations (sickness, cold impersonal institutions etc)
Connote envy

Choosing color: History
1950s: pink, black, turquoise
Classic early 1970s: burnt orange, avocado green, harvest gold, brown
1980s: neon brights

Choosing color: Nature
Colors that appear together naturally can make pleasing palettes for designs
If a color painting occurs in nature, it’s a good bet the pairing will look good in your layout.

Storyboarding
A storyboard is a series of sketches showing the primary structure and movements of an animation or interaction. These rough stills are created by designers in pre-production in order to quickly develop and communicate a narrative.
It is a practical tool and need not be a thing of beauty. It typically consists of a series of hand-drawn or digitally drawn frames accompanied by line spaces for written directions. They describe camera motions, sound elements, voice-overs, user interactions etc.
