3. REFLECTION

Experience
Advanced typography is one of the busiest modules in this semester. It requires constant improvement and work, where Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul will provide feedback and suggestions every week. Although it is tiring, I have learnt much from the process. I have also become more familiar with the software, so I can design faster compared to semester 1. It is very fast-paced and has a huge workload. The online classes were convenient as we can do our work quietly and focused when we are not getting feedback.

Observation

As this semester is done completely online due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was not really difficult to transfer from physical classes to online classes because we have been using Facebook as a communication platform in semester 1. In the first few weeks, the waiting time for feedback was quite long, where students have to share their screens and wait for it to load, accompanied by some technical issues like microphone problem etc. But as the weeks passed, Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul found better ways to hold online classes and for students to get consultation. This is a very good improvement I have seen throughout the semester. However, due to the lack of time, some presentations were not presented so not all the topics were covered and the last few weeks were without presentations.

Findings

I have learnt so much in this semester. Firstly, I got to further stress on the importance of looking at good designs, doing substantial research and reading. All of these are beneficial and essential for designers to get a good understanding of good design and also get inspiration. As I was doing my research on the final project (constructing my protest font), I had to look through all kinds of protest placards from different protests, to see how the designs brought out the message in a strong and firm manner. If I were to design a protest font straight away by looking at a few placards, I would not know how to design it well. Same goes with the font application onto protest placards.

On the other hand, I feel like my "designer eyes" have become more powerful, as I am able to tell if a design looks good or not by determining the problem of the design. I am not saying that I am very good at it, but it has improved a lot and has become a part of me unconsciously.
